MICE-related information for Tokyo following the Great East Japan Earthquake

To All Congress Organizers,
     Meeting Planners and
our friends in the industry around the world,

Two months have now passed since the earthquake and the resultant tsunami of March 11 impacted the North East of Japan. The following is an update on the latest situation in the capital city.

Tokyo - Open for Business

The city's outstanding convention and meeting facilities are fully functioning and operating as normal. Hotels are keen to welcome guests from around the world with visitors looking for a bargain able to take advantage of some excellent rates. Tokyo's world-famous public transportation system is its regular paragon of punctuality, safety and comfort. While the shopping districts of Ginza and Shinjuku may have dimmed their lights as part of the collective bid to save power, the shops and department shops are fully stocked and offering shoppers some exceptional bargains. Japan's restaurants continue to serve the world's finest cuisine, safe in the knowledge that the country has some of the world's most stringent food safety regulations and produce is carefully and rigorously monitored.

Tokyo - The Place to Meet

As one of Asia's most popular places for companies, associations and groups to meet, convene and exchange ideas we are both proud and pleased to say that many organizations have maintained their faith in the city and continued with events.

Tokyo - Bring Back Your Business

The simple fact is that there are as many, in some ways more, reasons to book an event, group or conference to Tokyo as ever. The same outstanding infrastructure is in place and the service is as exceptional as ever. What is particular to the current situation is the following:

  • Hotel and venue rates are more attractive than ever.
  • The enhanced flexibility being shown by hospitality service providers will ensure a remarkable and successful event.
  • Now is the time to show support and commitment to the people and companies of Tokyo, thereby cementing long-lasting relationships and earning a respect that will be repaid many times over in the years to come.

We are here to help you rediscover Tokyo and will be happy to assist in any way possible. Please do not hesitate to contact us at convention@tcvb.or.jp.

MICE-related information for Tokyo following the Great East Japan Earthquake

To All Congress Organizers,
     Meeting Planners and
our friends in the industry around the world,

One month has now passed since the earthquake and the tsunami occurred on March 11. We would like to provide you with a report on the latest information relating to MICE in Tokyo.

Convention facilities and hotels are operating as usual.
Convention facilities and hotels in Tokyo have not been damaged in any way due to the massive earthquake that hit the northeastern areas of Japan, and are open for business as usual. Public transportation service providers, shopping facilities, restaurants, corporations and schools are also carrying in the same way as always. Our concern at the moment is the potential shortage of electricity in summer when demand for power soars. All industries, together with all the residents and households in Tokyo, are currently engaged in efforts to conserve electricity and avoid spikes in power consumption at certain high-demand periods during the day.

Exhibitions and international conferences in Tokyo will generally be held as planned from May onwards.
Partly because of the impact of the rolling blackouts, exhibitions planned from March to early April inevitably had to be canceled. However, most events from mid-April are planned to be held as scheduled. Some international conferences were canceled or postponed, or subjected to a change of venue, due to reductions in the number of overseas participants arising from travel advisories and reductions in scheduled flights. However, most conferences are planned to be held from the early summer.

The 43rd International Premium Incentive Show, Spring 2011 was held on a grand scale from April 6, 2011 (Wednesday) to April 8, 2011 (Friday) at Tokyo Big Sight.

Blossom Japan

Blossom Japan

Blossom Japan was successfully held at the Tokyo International Forum over a period of four days from January 18 to 21, 2011. This is Japan’s first invitation-only event targeting the luxury travel industry. Tokyo Convention and Visitors Bureau interviewed the event organizer, Mr. Jay Martens, CEO of Lucioles based in Sydney, Australia.

1. How did you find Tokyo as a site of holding event? Any new findings?
interview
I think that Tokyo is an ideal place to hold any event. The vibrant city has so much to offer: great accommodation, amazing nightlife, culture, impeccable service and above everything the uniqueness that is Japan. With more five star hotels being opened, more Michelin star restaurants that any other city in the world, the city is really top notch for an event organiser like us that is aiming at the very high end scale of customers.
Service levels in Japan and in particular in Tokyo are legendary. But to experience first hand was for a veteran of 15 years in the exhibition industry a real eye opener.
2. What would you think the strong/appealing points of Tokyo as an event-holding city?
- The first thing that springs to mind is the service level, security, great venues and above all I would say expertise.
- We got really great support from the Tokyo Convention Bureau, one of the best I have seen worldwide. They constantly went out of their way to introduce us to the right people and help facilitate all the necessary negotiations
- The transport system in Tokyo is second to none. When you have done events in places like Moscow, London and other major cities, none of them can tip Tokyo. If you lose anything in a taxi, there is more than one way to get in touch with the taxi and they will deliver your goods to you at no cost. Exceptional!
3. Do you have any episode during your stay in Tokyo?
Tokyo is really a place to experience food. Most restaurants are a stage and created not only for amazing food pallets but also environments for customers to enjoy something very unique. Places like Gonpachi (Kill Bill) or the Ninja restaurants are a few examples.
The slogan Endless Discovery is really a great tribute as well for the city of Tokyo as you are really on a journey of discoveries in an enchanting city.
